SGV calls for efficient restructuring
SGV, an association of Swiss SMEs, has called for a restructuring of SBB Cargo, to ensure that single wagonload transport (EWLV) becomes financially self-sustaining as soon as possible. This follows the adoption of the revised freight transport act by the Swiss parliament, which includes an eight-year support package to temporarily fund EWLV services. The law also provides a one-off contribution to support the introduction of digital automatic coupling to modernise operations.
However, parliament rejected the introduction of a modal shift target for domestic freight. The SGV welcomed the continued focus on integrating transport modes without setting modal shift quotas. In implementing the revised law, the association demanded transparent financing and a stronger customer focus to make EWLV viable without state aid in the long term. It opposes any extension of subsidies beyond the agreed period. (js)
