Serving communities in remote Pacific Islands

The Pacific humanitarian air service of the world food programme (WFP) launched a flight from Brisbane, Australia, delivering 6.5 t of medical cargo and moving humanitarian personnel to support the Covid-19 response in Fiji, Kiribati and Nauru.

Cargo included PPE as well as ventilators and testing cartridges, transported for the government of Kiribati, WHO, Unicef, UN development programme, International Federation of the Red Cross, US agency for international development and the Australian government.

Sanaka Samarasinha, UN resident coordinator for ten countries in the Pacific: "With border closures and quarantine restrictions continuing to stress supply chains across the region, WFP is proud to be able to serve these communities by coordinating and delivering this much needed service." (ah)
