Security concerns raise shipping’s CO2 emissions
Because of the attacks by Houthi militants in the Red Sea, the region has become a no-go area for international shipping since January 2024. The German navy's frigate “Hessen” is stationed there to protect cargo ships, yet vessels are advised to avoid this route.
Most ships now circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, adding about a week to travel times and significantly increasing costs. Detours have caused freight rates per container to surge by over 300%.
The longer route augments fuel consumption and raises CO2 emissions by approximately 30% per ship, necessitating more CO2 certificates in Europe and thus further driving up transport costs. Innovative solutions for data transparency are required to manage these logistical challenges effectively. (pb)
