Second zero-emissions cargo ship on its way
A 5,000 dwt ‘zero-emissions’ general cargo ship, 120 m long and 22 m wide, is going to set sail with the aim of becoming commercially operational before 2027. The ‘Energy Observer 2’ will be able to transport up to 240 teu and will have a capacity for 480 linear meters of ro-ro cargo. For access, it will have a 15 m wide ramp.
In 2017, the ‘zero-emissions’ catamaran ‘Energy Observer’ travelled more than 72,420 km propelled by sail, generating its own electricity using solar and wind energy and producing hydrogen from sea water.
The new ship will no longer obtain the energy necessary for its propulsion from sea water, but it will be equipped with four rigid sails with a total area of 1,450 sqm, a hydrogen fuel cell that will power 4 MW electric motors and a tank for liquid hydrogen of 1,000 cbm of capacity that will give it around 10,460 km of autonomy.
In addition to Energy Observer, which is represented by its industrial subsidiary Eodev, the project is supported by shipping company CMA CGM, Air Liquide, a provider of gases, technologies and services for industry and the health sector, and Ayro, a designer and manufacturer of all-electric vehicles.
