Second phase of Bilbao pier project out to tender
The Port Authority of Bilbao has issued a tender for the second phase of the central pier construction, with a budget of EUR 55.44 million, excluding VAT. Funded from the Port Authority's own resources, the project has a completion timeline of 26 months.
This phase includes the construction of caissons, backfill, and the superstructure of the new port docks, using surplus materials from other public works in a circular economy initiative. Bids are due by 20 June, with the contract award expected in the summer and construction commencing in the autumn.
The project will create a 31.2-hectare port area, completing the Outer Abra expansion started in the 1990s. The aim of this development is to meet the demand for port land, bolster Bilbao's status as a major port on the Cantabrian coast and drive economic growth and employment in the Basque Country. (pb)
