Seaports of Niedersachsen stems the tide
Lower Saxony’s sea ports have published their annual results. All in all, the nine units - Brake, Cuxhaven, Emden, Leer, Nordenham, Oldenburg, Papenburg, Stade and Wilhelmshaven - handled around 48.7 million t of goods in sea traffic in 2020, 9 % less than in the strong previous year, but on the level of 2016.
While liquid bulk grew by 2 % (24.77 million t), solid bulk cargo dropped by 22% to 12.23 million t. Break bulk fell by 14% to around 6.2 million t. At 1.5 million units, total throughput of new vehicles was below the level of 2019.
Finally, the container terminal Wilhelmshaven handled more than 423,000 teu last year. “A solid balance sheet,” commented André Heim, managing director of the port marketing company Seaports of Niedersachsen. (cd)
