Seaport Manatee secures hurricane recovery aid

Seaport Manatee is set to receive USD 9.5 million in emergency funding from the state of Florida to aid recovery efforts following hurricane Milton, which made landfall on 9 October.

Announced by Florida governor Ron DeSantis, the funding will support repairs to critical port infrastructure, including USD 5.5 million for berth repairs and dredging, USD 3.5 million for security improvements, and USD 500,000 for infrastructure fortification planning.

Initial damage assessments estimate potential losses of USD 200 million, affecting warehouses, berths, and other facilities. While some losses may not be covered by insurance, the state’s financial and logistical support, including assistance from state agencies and the Florida National Guard, is expected to accelerate the port's return to full operations.

Seaport Manatee serves as a key trade hub for southwest and central Florida, generating nearly USD 7.3 billion in annual economic impact and supporting over 42,000 jobs. (pb)
