Sculptures on the move

Harder Logistics, a specialist for the transport of artworks headquartered in Neu-Ulm (Bavaria, Germany), took over the challenging task of transferring three sculptures from the Ulm museum’s roof terrace to the city’s central artworks depot free of charge.

The tricky part of the operation: The sculptures were in an open space at a height of 27 m surrounded by the narrow alleys of the old part of the city. Marcello Danieli, managing director of Harder Logistics: “We have the know-how and the technical equipment to move the heavy and highly sensitive artworks.”

The first obstacle was to get the sculptures moving at all on the roof terrace. Three shed roofs, which provide the lightening within the museum, made manoeuvring the extremely heavy objects very difficult.

The second obstacle was the location of the museum in the centre of the old city. It can only be accessed via a narrow alleyway, which is also the entrance to the fire brigade.

Danieli explained the solution: “We found a space in a neighbouring courtyard that can be reached by a crane with all-wheel steering.” (mw)
