SBB Cargo investing in standardisation

The Swiss freight railway has ordered 570 flat wagons and 270 bulk freight units from the Slovakian manufacturer Tatravagonka, with the first cars due to be delivered from the end of 2026 onwards. Both types will be prepared for the use of automatic brake tests and digital automatic clutches.

With these acquisitions SBB Cargo is reducing the number of its own wagon types to three, thus standardising its fleet more. SBB Cargo additionally plans to procure new covered wagons in a second tranche too.

The move ensures uniform logistics throughout the enterprise’s freight transport and simplifies maintenance, the company explained. (ben)
