Saudi Ports' container handling leaps

In October 2023, Saudi Ports, managed by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), reported a 5.31% increase in container handling, reaching 741,905 teu compared to the previous year.

The number of export containers rose by 9.72%, while imported containers showed an uptick of 5.32%, indicating that trade and supply chains remained strong and robust. Transshipment containers also grew by 2.12%.

Despite these improvements, total tonnage handled saw a 5.90% decline, and foodstuffs tonnage dropped by 34.61%. However, general cargo, solid and liquid bulk cargo, and livestock unloading rates all showed significant growth.

Passenger traffic and the number of cars handled at the ports also increased. Saudi Ports' enhanced performance aligns with the national strategy to position the kingdom as a global logistics hub and is reflected in its improved ranking in the 2023 Lloyd's List 100 Ports and the Unctad Liner Shipping Connectivity Index.
