Sailors’ Society welcomes new port chaplain

The Reverend Frans Sahetapy is joining the international maritime welfare charity Sailors’ Society as its new Southampton (UK) port chaplain today, 7 December 2020. In his new role he will have to provide welfare and chaplaincy support to thousands of seafarers who visit the port of Southampton every year.

Sahetapy worked as port chaplain for almost 20 years and was most recently the Sailors’ Society/Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest’s port chaplain in Tilbury (UK). The Sailors’ Society has served seamen for 200 years, and faced some difficulties since the outbreak of Covid-19, which has brought extra pressures on merchant seafarers. The charity supports seafarers and their families in 89 ports worldwide. (amh)
