RZD: China – Madrid route needs an additional freight base
Russian Railways’ CEO Oleg Belozorov has discussed the further cooperation in the railway sector with Spain’s minister José Luis Ábalos. One of the priorities is to increase transit traffic between Spain and China, which is of particular importance for the growing container flows between Europe and China.
Container services are currently operating between Yiwu (China) and Madrid (Spain). In H1/2019, 39 container trains transported more than 3,600 teu on this route.
Furthermore, Oleg Belozorov noted that there is significant potential for cooperation between Russia and Spain on railfreight. In this context, the parties discussed ways to encourage the setting up of an additional European freight base on this route. (ben)
