RWI/ISL: a pessimistic outlook
The container throughput index of the RWI (Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics) rose to 122.4 points in February 2023, offsetting the low value of the previous month (117.2 points).
The institute notes, however, that volumes in European ports continue to decline, unlike in the Chinese ports. In fact, their container throughput only decreased slightly, from 132.2 to 130.1 points, while the North Range Index for continental European ports on the North Sea dropped from 93.6 to 89.8 points in the previous month. Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research: "This indicates a weak foreign trade, especially in Germany." (lh)
