Rural areas hold most dangers for truckers

Snap, a provider of smart payment systems for the road haulage industry, reports that Bulgaria, Poland, and Czechia have Europe’s most hazardous roads for truck drivers and that Bulgaria has more fatal HGV collisions per year than Poland and Czechia combined. The countries with the least dangerous roads for truckers include Denmark, Austria, and Sweden.

After a 17% EU-wide decline in fatal accidents during the pandemic, figures have already begun to rise again. The analysis also shows that 40% of all fatal HGV collisions within the EU occurred in rural areas, suggesting road safety infrastructure developments need to extend past motorways, Snap concluded.

For its analysis, the payment service provider compared the average yearly fatal HGV collision rate to the country’s total road network. (ben)
