Rotterdam to handle 750 m trains in future
The Dutch port plans to build a bundle of six tracks suitable for 740 m trains as part of the new Maasvlakte-Zuid railway yard. The project was developed in close cooperation with infrastructure manager Pro Rail and with the use of a “Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)” subsidy.
The building company Swietelsky will start construction in the spring of 2025, with commissioning planned for mid-2027.
The new rail yard will help to reduce CO₂ emissions from hinterland and continental transport by 30% by 2030. Rotterdam’s Port Authority expects it to boost the combination of 6,750 additional trains annually between the Maasvlakte and the hinterland. (ben)
