Rotterdam adopts ‘Secure Chain’ for imports

Starting on 3 February 2025, Rotterdam port will implement ‘Secure Chain’ container release for imports from the Far East and Oceania, ending the use of vulnerable pin codes. This shift follows the recent ‘Secure Chain’ integration for shipments from Africa, the Middle East, India and Pakistan, with Europe and feeder cargo to follow.

‘Secure Chain’, a collaborative effort between the industry and authorities, is part of Rotterdam’s drive for secure, reliable logistics. Since its inception, over 630,000 import containers have been processed via ‘Secure Chain’, with major carriers like CMA CGM, Maersk and MSC on board.

Authorised parties handle container release in a closed, digital network via the port community system ‘Portbase’, the neutral logistics platform for the Dutch ports, which ensures that only verified transporters can access terminals. (pb)
