Robust start of world trade in 2022
The container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) continued its growth in January 2022, rising from 120.5 points (seasonally adjusted) to 122.0 points, according to the latest flash estimate.
The index for Chinese ports again contributed the strongest increase, surging from 126.5 to 128.6 points. The index for Europe’s North Range moved sidewards, from 112.6 (revised) to 112.9 points. The RWI/ISL index for February 2022 will be published on 30 March 2022.
Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research, commented that the “supply bottlenecks are continuing to decrease. So far, the omicron wave does not seem to have any serious impact on cargo handling in the Chinese ports.” (sh)
