Road-based supply chains would benefit most
A shift to Inland Rail in Australia could cut annual transport costs by up to AUD 213 million (EUR 144.1 million), providing benefits across 22 million t of freight, according to a report of Csiro (a commonwealth scientific and industrial research organisation).
Csiro has also found that businesses relying on road-based supply chains would benefit most from switching to Inland Rail, with an average saving of AUD 80.77 (EUR 60) per payload tonne in transport costs.
The project has the potential to deliver transport cost savings of AUD 149.4 million (EUR 101 million) for intermodal freight. Once fully operational, Inland Rail will take 200,000 trucks off the road each year, or 150 B-doubles for each train travelling between Melbourne and Brisbane. (ben)
