Rivers of growth at Contargo
Despite subdued port markets, Contargo reported a slight rise in container volumes transported in Northern France's river areas in 2023. Contargo North France confirmed its lead at the port of Valenciennes, becoming the top inland port for sea freight containers in Hauts-de-France.
Similarly, in Alsace, Contargo Sàrl added more rail connections to its multimodal portfolio. Marking forty years in France, Contargo has been developing its multimodal container transport offerings from the Upper Rhine to Rotterdam and Antwerp since 1983.
Notably, Contargo Süd augmented its Basel-Westport shuttle services, linking Weil am Rhein with Rotterdam/Antwerp five times weekly. In Hauts-de-France, Contargo North France launched a new line and added a third major vessel to its inland shipping services, boosting 2023's volume by 1.5% over 2022.
Valenciennes Ports, managed by Contargo, remained a crucial hub. For 2024, efforts will focus on decarbonising transport activities, transitioning to biofuel and electric trucks, with plans to extend operations in French river areas. (pb)
