Risks of the European emissions trading systems
Interferry, the International Association of Ferry and Passenger Ship Operators, has warned that the inclusion of maritime transport in the European emissions trading system (EU ETS) is going to result in a significant increase in transport costs. The change could lead to some freight transports returning to the roads.
The EU’s modal shift strategy (EU Strategy for sustainable and intelligent mobility, COM/2020/789) establishes that the TMCD should increase by 25% by 2030 and 50% by 2050. Interferry believes that the original European Commission proposal for the phase-in of maritime transport in the ETS would facilitate a “reasonably balanced” entry of these new costs and would correspond well with the Commission’s proposal for road transport, thus avoiding market distortion.
