Rhenus launches CO2 reduction programme for airfreight

Rhenus Logistics Air & Ocean has launched the world’s first global air freight carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction programme. With Rhegreen, a free-of-charge service, customers can choose a ‘greener’ aircraft for their cargo shipments.

The company has created a system that calculates rankings for airlines according to aircraft types, fuel efficiency and the distances involved. It shows which aircraft is the most efficient in terms of CO2 emissions on any route. The programme, which was validated by an external organisation, enables CO2 reductions of between 10% and 40%.

For example, by choosing the Airbus A350 or Boeing 787 Dreamliner to ship 1000 kg from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport (the Netherlands) to Shanghai (China), customers can save 1 t of CO2 compared to average emissions on that particular route. Rhenus now offers the Rhegreen service from Schiphol airport to Chicago, Mexico City, Mumbai, Shanghai and Singapore with plans to expand to other destinations from Frankfurt, Brussels and Madrid.
