Revised guidelines for drug and alcohol control

The oil companies’ international marine forum (Ocimf) has released updated guidelines for the control of drugs and alcohol in the maritime industry (2024) to enhance safety in marine operations. The guidelines contain comprehensive recommendations for managing the risks associated with drug and alcohol use in the maritime industry, including tankers, barges, offshore vessels, and terminals.

The document covers the use of prescribed and over-the-counter medication, recreational drug or alcohol use, dependency, and accidental exposure. It emphasises the importance of a well-defined drug and alcohol policy that includes preventive and supportive measures, a testing programme, and disciplinary actions.

The update expands the scope to cover a broader range of maritime operations and incorporates new information on sampling and testing methods. In its press release, Ocimf encourages the industry to use the documentation and training resources available on its website. (pb)
