Repercussions of the Shanghai lockdown
The impact of shutdowns on a global scale can be seen in Europe's largest economy, among others. The People's Republic of China is currently reacting to rising Corona infection figures by imposing lockdowns. The metropolis of Shanghai is one of the regions affected.
The port of Shanghai was the German seaports’ most important partner in container traffic in 2021. According to the German Federal Statistical Office, traffic with ports in China accounted for 3.1 million teu in 2021, or a good fifth (20.7%) of the container throughput of German seaports. Shanghai alone accounted for 968,000 teu.
Shanghai's most important German partner port was Hamburg, with 449,000 teu received and 315,000 teu shipped. Overall, container throughput at German seaports in 2021 was 14.8 million teu, 5.9% higher than in 2020, but still 1.5% below the level of the pre-Corona year 2019. (sh)
