Reopening routes for freight traffic
Deutsche Bahn (DB) is reactivating 20 lines, with 245 km of track, for rail operations in Germany. These lines are the first batch of previously closed routes which are to be reopened to passenger or freight traffic in future.
In recent months, a team of DB experts has identified a portfolio of lines in Germany covering up to around 1,300 km that have traffic potential. The company believes that, after weighing up the costs and benefits, it would be worthwhile to recommission a large part of these tracks.
The decision to reactivate the routes will be taken by the German federal government, the federal states and the local transport authorities in cooperation with DB. (ben)
