Recycling used rail ties to reach climate goal
In USA, Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and Shell are joining forces to accelerate the decarbonisation of rail transport.
The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding that allows exploration and testing of several initiatives designed to help UP achieve its goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 26% by 2030 and, ultimately, reach net zero by 2050. UP and Shell have identified several opportunities to further reduce GHG.
Among other things, these opportunities include recycling used rail ties into bio feedstocks, leveraging renewable energy for fleet vehicles and facilities as well as researching alternate locomotive propulsion systems. (ben)
