Record number of ships at the Suez Canal
One week ago, on 13 March 2023, Adm. Ossama Rabiee, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, announced that navigation through the Canal had reached the highest number in terms of daily transits: 107 vessels (25 container ships, 28 bulk carriers, 33 tankers, six car carriers, and 15 other vessels) from both directions travelled through the canal, 56 vessels going southbound with a net tonnage of 3.4 million t, and 51 vessels going northbound with a net tonnage of 2.9 million t.
Rabiee was particularly pleased by the transit of the mega vessel "Ever Gifted", heading to Malaysia with 223'000 t of cargo on board, and of the container ship "Cosco Shipping Universe" heading to Greece with 232'000 t of cargo on board. The chairman added that the New Suez Canal project had paved the way for this large increase in traffic. (lh)
