Reaching new heights in Rostock
A quartet of dignitaries was invited to the official inauguration ceremony for the new heavy-duty crane that was held in the port area of Liebherr (Rostock, Germany) a few days ago: Christian Pegel, energy minister, Stefanie Wohlfahrt and Patricia Rüf of the Liebherr family and Harry Glawe, minister for economic affairs of the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (from left to right).
However, the TCC (travelling cargo crane) 78000 would be a superlative product for any crane manufacturer: with a tare weight of 5,500 t and a height of 164 m, the portal crane has a load capacity of 1,600 t up to a height of 120 m above the quay walls. At the end of 2019, the TTC will move a HCL 29500, an offshore crane with its own lifting height of 180 m, on to the special ship “Orion”, which will be deployed in the port.
The company’s premises in Rostock had to be reinforced with 600 monopiles, among other things, so that it could safely support its new landmark that has a double carriage with a gauge of 30 m. The TTC can also perform turning manoeuvres of up to 420 m until the quay, which is an exceptional feat for a portal crane. EUR 45 million were invested in the project. Liebherr in Rostock has now started a new era in the handling of heavy-duty cargo. (cd)
