RCL orders more newbuilds
Backed by a good result in 2021, Thailand-based Regional Carrier Lines (RCL) recently ordered two 7,000 teu units, contracting Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding in China to build the two vessels of this size for an investment of USD 170 million. Deliveries are expected for October 2024 and May 2025, respectively.
Alreday last year, the Thai shipping line ordered two 12,000 teu newbuilds to be delivered in 2022 and 2023, which will be chartered by the carrier Zim for a period of five years.
For the full year 2021, RCL reported an annual profit of THB 17.98 billion (around USD 540 million), almost tenfold compared to the profit in 2020. Revenue increased by 123% and cargo volumes by 8%. (sh)
