Railways ready to step in
Railfreight is ready to take over additional transport in Germany and cross-border services for trade and industry during the corona crisis, the network of European railways (NEE) and the association of German transport companies (VDV) say.
Road hauliers have repeatedly warned of staff shortages, because truck drivers have been put under quarantine in their home countries. By contrast, the railfreight companies have so far experienced only a slight rise in staff shortages above the amount that is usual for the season.
By shifting cargo to the railways, shippers could avoid staff problems and road congestion at the frontiers, the associations point out. (ben)
