Railway node in Barcelona takes next step
The rail expansion project in the area south of the Port of Barcelona has reached a new milestone. The process of citizen participation for the Urban Master Plan (UMP) for the Port of Barcelona railway none has begun, a preliminary step before drafting, processing and final approval of the plan.
This railway intersection, complete with six terminals, includes a piggyback terminal for road-rail transport, a reception and shipment terminal and a loading and unloading terminal, all located in the former bed of the Llobregat River, and, finally, the Nou Llobregat Terminal, a reception and shipment terminal parallel to the current course of the river.
The project is part of the port's intermodal strategy, which, over the last 10 years, has led to 2.8 million fewer truck journeys. In 2020, rail traffic in the port area kept 175,000 trucks off the road, the equivalent of 700 fewer trucks on the road every day. Thanks to this decline n road traffic, 42,700 t less carbon were released and 14 million litres less fuel burned. (cd)
