Railway industry in search of skilled workers

In a joint statement published during the Innotrans in Berlin last week, the two industry associations VDB (Association of German railway companies) and VDV (association of German transport companies) called for targeted political measures to combat the shortage of skilled labour in the railway industry.

These include, among others, railway-specific (training) courses, targeted further training and retraining programmes and faster integration of foreign skilled workers. According to the two associations, the skills and labour shortage in the rail industry will become even more acute by 2030. This is because by 2030, almost 50% of operational employees will reach retirement age. (ben)
