Railfreight recovering in the EU
Railfreight transport volumes in the European Union saw some recovery in 2021, having previously declined year-on-year, namely by 2.2% in 2019 and by 6.1% in 2020. To prevent the spread of Covid-19, member states put in place restrictive measures that had a significant impact on railfreight transport.
In 2021 there was an indication of some recovery, with railfreight transport up by 8.7% compared with 2020, to 399 billion tkm. It almost reached the high of 2018, according to Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office.
The first signs of recovery were observed in the fourth quarter of 2020, when data pointed to a 5.1% increase. This trend gradually continued in all quarters of 2021. (ben)
