Rail upgrade nearly doubles freight capacity

Construction work has begun on the 104 km long Nis-Dimitrovgrad railway section in Serbia, which is part of the pan-European railway corridor X. The improved cargo link will strengthen Serbia’s connection with Bulgaria, shorten journey times and improve safety.

It will also increase speeds from 50 km/h to 120 km/h and freight volumes from 3.2 million to around 6.2 million t a year, the European Investment Bank (EIB) said.

The project involves the reconstruction and modernisation of an existing unelectrified single-track railway line and the construction of the northern rail bypass around the city of Nis, as well as electrification and signalling work on both sections. (ben)
