Rail link to relieve Greater Cairo Area corridor

Egypt has approved a USD 400 million loan deal with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) for the Cairo-Alexandria trade logistics development project which will create a railway bypass along the Greater Cairo Area railway corridor.

The bypass will provide freight trains between the Alexandria Sea Port and the newly built 6th of October Dry Port, with an alternative route to the west of Greater Cairo. When in operation, it will allow 15 container trains per day by 2030 and 50 trains per day by 2060 to reach this dry port.

Additional freight trains will run between the Alexandria Port, Upper Egypt, and the Red Sea. Currently, Egypt's rail system focuses mainly on passenger services. (ben)
