Rail has highest market share in 25 years
In Switzerland, the opening of the Ceneri base tunnel and the 4 m corridor in H1/2021 enabled the railways to expand their position in transalpine freight traffic. Rail now accounts for a share of 74.4%. This is the highest value in 25 years.
The number of truck journeys increased slightly after the corona-related slump of the previous year, but continues to decline in a longer-term comparison. In H1/2021, a total of 453,000 trucks crossed the Swiss Alps, 40,000 more than in H1/2020.
According to the latest statistics of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT) on transalpine freight traffic, 15.2% more goods were transported through the Alps in H1/2021 than in H1/2020 and H1/2019. (ben)
