Rail company pushes ahead with hybrid technology
The Deutsche Bahn (DB) intends to make an increasing number of locomotives, large machinery and repair vehicles more eco-friendly. To this end, the German railway company has now concluded a framework contract worth EUR 250 million for up to 56 special vehicles with hybrid engines which in future will be deployed for the maintenance and repair of overhead cables in Germany.
To begin with, 16 vehicles produced by the manufacturer Harsco Rail will be operational as from 2022. In addition, Prima H3 hybrid shunting locomotives will be used in Würzburg and Nuremberg. The Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahngesellschaft (MEG), a subsidiary of DB Cargo, will also deploy hybrid shunting locomotives in Schkopau. (ben)
