Queuing up at the Panama Canal
According to data collected by Bloomberg, the number of vessels waiting to pass through the Panama Canal is rising. A week ago, there were 101 vessels waiting their turn to make the 64.5 km journey through the canal, six more than the average so far this year. The lockdown in Chinese cities is therefore also taking its toll on this route.
The expansion of the passage in 2016, by installing larger locks, amongst other things, allows larger vessels from Asia to reach the US east coast.
According to the maritime platform provider Xeneta, Asian imports into the US west coast dropped by 3.4% in Q1/2022 compared to Q1/2021, while the number of goods entering US east coast ports climbed by 12.9%. (sh)
