Queensland’s zinc railway resumes service
The first freight trains are operating successfully again on the Mount Isa Line in Queensland, Australia marking the reopening of the 1,000 km route after twelve-weeks of unprecedented flood repairs.
The line is used by miners for the transport of zinc and lead concentrate from the Mount Isa region to Townswill Port, according to the rail line operator Queensland Rail.
During the flood event on 31 January a Pacific National freight train stowed at Nelia was significantly impacted by flood waters, causing the train to derail. The train, which consists one locomotive and 81 wagons, had to be removed and more than 200 km of flood-damaged track had to be recovered to resume services on the line. (ben)
