Push to reinstate Eyre Peninsula rail line

The agriculture network Viterra and the railfreight operator Aurizon have submitted a formal application for federal government funding of AUD 220 million (EUR 133.3 million) for the modernisation and reopening of the Eyre Peninsula rail network in South Australia.

The proposal includes upgrading the currently closed narrow gauge line from Port Lincoln to Cummins and further to Kimba and Wudinna to a level where rail can operate at increased axle weights, improved travel speeds and with a higher reliability in the warmer summer period.

If the line is reinstated and upgraded, Aurizon will be responsible for maintenance and invest in the rollingstock fleet to meet Viterra’s aim to move at least 1.3 million t of grain by rail each year. (ben)
