Public subsidy for ammonia supply project

Japan Petroleum Exploration, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, IHI Corporation, Mitsui & Co., and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines have received approval for their survey to establish an ammonia supply base in Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, under the FY 2024 “subsidy for measures to promote introduction of non-fossil energy (hydrogen supply infrastructure improvement project)” from the consortium for resilient omni-energy supply system (Cros).

This initiative aims to support Japan's 2050 carbon-neutral goal by using ammonia as a hydrogen carrier, aiding the transition to a hydrogen-based energy society.

The Japanese government is strategically developing international standards for ammonia-related technologies and has enacted the hydrogen society promotion bill to support this transition. The survey will explore the feasibility of creating infrastructure for hydrogen and ammonia supply, with a focus on large-scale demand and efficient supply chains.

Launched in January 2024, the joint study aims to establish facilities for receiving, storing, and supplying ammonia in the Soma area, extending to the broader regions of north Kanto, Tohoku, and Hokkaido. The collaboration, which is supported by local governments, seeks to contribute to regional decarbonisation and economic growth. (pb)
