PSA to build in Halifax and Pennsylvania
Singapore-headquartered PSA International has won the bid for the container terminal Halterm in the port of Halifax. It is currently the largest container terminal on the east coast of Canada. Among the other bidders were Canadian National Railway, CMA CGM and Montreal-based Logistec.
Selling the terminal is Australia’s Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets. PSA also acquired Penn Terminals, a multipurpose terminal in Pennsylvania (USA) from Macquarie. Regulatory approvals for the Halterm and Penn Terminals from Canadian and US authorities are still pending.
The port of Halifax is planning an expansion project to better serve ultra large container vessels. The port’s two container terminals can currently handle 1.1 million per year. The planned extension of the Halterm terminal will shape the berth length in order to handle two ships of more than 10,000 teu at the same time. (kd)
