Project to upgrade the port of Cuxhaven approved

Plans to close a gap between Europakai and the Offshore-Basishafen in the north German port of Cuxhaven have been approved. Once it has received confirmation of the approval from the authorities, the Hafengesellschaft Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts) can begin work to upgrade the sea port of Cuxhaven, to meet demand for more handling capacity.

At the Europakai the berths 1 to 3 are working to capacity. Berth 4 was put into operation in autumn 2018 to expand the service. This berth is also expected to reach the limit of its capabilities in the foreseeable future.

“As the increasing cargo volumes show, its strategically-favourable location at the mouth of the River Elbe makes the port of Cuxhaven an ideal hub for cargo handling and logistics,” says Bernd Althusmann, Lower Saxony’s minister for the economy, labour, transport and digitisation.

The length of the quay walls of the planned berths 5-7 will be 1,257 m. The area behind the walls spans about 280,000 sqm. Upon closure of the gap, the total connected length of the berths 1-9 on the river will be about 3.6 km. (mw)
