Production hits record levels

According to Drewry, a maritime research and consulting company, dry freight container production is set to be the second highest on record in 2024, with all-time highs in the second quarter and July’s output exceeding 850,000 teu from Chinese factories.

The surge is driven by strong export demand from Asia and supply chain challenges, including congestion at major transhipment hubs and extended voyage times due to the Red Sea crisis.

While reefer container production increased, the overall seaborne reefer trade has seen a decline, highlighting the dominance of dry freight containers in the market this year. (pb)
