Power-to-methanol in Antwerp
In Antwerp, seven partners have founded a consortium for the eco-friendly production of methanol, a main raw material for the industry in the port. The partners in this project are: energy supplier Engie, transmission system operator Fluxys, waste management group Indaver, chemical company Inovyn, logistics services provider Oiltanking, the port of Antwerp and the Flemish government's investment company PMV.
Construction of a demonstration facility at the Inovyn location in Antwerp is scheduled to start by 2022. The aim is to produce 8,000 t of sustainable methanol per year, thereby avoiding at least the same amount of CO2 emissions.
To date, methanol has been produced from fossil raw materials. As part of the "power-to-methanol" project, it shall be replaced by sustainably produced methanol that is gained from captured CO2 and sustainably produced hydrogen – a first for Belgium. (mw)
