Potential ILA strike in US East Coast ports

A strike by the US East Coast port workers' union (ILA), if initiated on 1 October, could severely disrupt container handling, with an estimated 2.3 million teu expected in October. This translates to 74,000 teu impacted daily, including 20,000 empty containers.

The backlog created by each day of the strike would take about four to six days to clear, assuming the port's current excess capacity of 13%.

A one-week strike could delay operations until mid-November, while a two-week strike might extend disruptions into 2025, significantly affecting the flow of goods. (pb)
