Positive outlook for freight transport
After declines in the corona year 2020, Germany’s federal ministry of transport and digital infrastructure (BMVI) volumes in most modes of transport to grow again in 2021.
The positive trend is expected to continue at least until 2024. Specifically, the BMVI expects transport volumes to increase by 3.0 % and transport performance by 4.0 % in 2021. Above-average growth is forecast for railfreight, intermodal transport and air freight.
For the period from 2022 to 2024, the ministry predicts an annual growth of 1.8% in transport volumes and 2.1% in transport performance.
According to the forecast, with the exception of inland navigation, all modes of transport will have reached or even exceeded their pre-crisis levels by 2024. (ben)
