Ports in India prepare for the worst
The Indian Register of Shipping recently prepared disaster management plans (DMP) for ports operated by the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), covering the ports of Alang, Bhavnagar, Jafrabad, Mandvi, Okha, Porbandar and Veraval.
These DMPs support ports in responding promptly in times of emergencies and ensure that normal functioning of the ports is restored as fast as possible. The ports under GMB have special significance as they are spread over a large coastal area and serve trade and businesses in the hinterland region and the industrial belt.
Capt. Ashwin Solanki, GMB's chief nautical officer: “GMB is committed to offer its best efforts to achieve zero casualty in any disaster situation." (sh)
