Port railway overtakes road haulage
In 2021, and for the first time in the port’s history, more containers were transported by rail than by road to and from Bremen’s container port.
While 1,097 million containers were trucked to their destinations, 1,112 million containers were shipped on the tracks of the Bremische Hafeneisenbahn in 2021, the “Hafenspiegel” published by Bremenports and the Bremen office of the senator for science and ports reported.
The increase in environmentally friendly rail transport confirms a long-standing trend. To ensure future growth, however, it is essential that the expansion of rail infrastructure continues to be driven forward with the highest priority, the Hafenspiegel adds. (ben)
