Port of Virginia pushing intermodal in depth

The port of Virginia was the first US port to accept megaships from China in 2016, after they passed through the newly-widened Panama Canal. As the country's competing ports have since caught up, the commercial channels in the port of Virginia’s inner harbour and the fairway in Chesapeake Bay will be dredged to 17 m.

Furthermore, the bay's fairway will be widened to as much as 425 m in select areas, which will allow ultra-large containerships to pass each other. The project’s target completion date is 2025.

In addition, the port has just invested in four new STS cranes, and the Richmond marine terminal, which provides barge services, handled more than 30,000 containers in 2018 - ten years after the facility started operations. The port says that the volumes shipped by barge save 120,000 truck from using route 64. (kd)
