Port of Nansha also benefits

As part of the Guangzhou Port Group (GPG) of mainland China, the Port of Nansha benefited from favourable market conditions in 2021. Located northwest of Hong Kong on the western bank of the Pearl River, the port saw a throughput of 17.6 million teu.

In total, GPG handled record volumes of 24.4 million teu in 2021. The tally is up 2.14% over 2020, with nearly 23% growth to North America.

In the Port of Nansha, the building phase 4 of a new automated container terminal opening in Q3/2022 will add approximately 5 million teu to its annual capacity.

Furthermore, the Port of Nansha’s resilience was tested in a disruption in May of 2021, when the Port of Yantian located northeast of Hong Kong on Mirs Bay, had an unexpected Covid-19 outbreak that resulted in a suspension and a severe slowdown at the port.

Various new processes and adaptations enabled the Port of Nansha to handle ship calls with 275,000 teu over the normal container flow-through at the Port’s three terminals. (sh)
